The film is set in the 9th century, one hundred years before baptism of Poland. The Gopło lake country is ruled by "bloody prince" Popiel who murdered his closest relatives to ensure the succession of his son. His crimes cause a revolt peasants. Ziemek, a young hunter and warrior, is in love with the daughter of peasant Wisza, beautiful Dziwa. He does not want to accept the will of the girl's father who intends to offer her to gods and sacrificed her to the shrine of Świętowit. He decides to fight for his beloved.
Ziemek meets Piastun, former military commander of Prince Popiel. He decides to join Piastun and other peasants to fight against the "bloody prince".
